A boat carrying members of Jews for Justice for Palestine set sail from Cyprus this morning (26/09/10), with a cargo of aid and a message of solidarity for the people of Gaza.

This action is being taken on the day that the freeze on building Jewish settlements in the Palestinian Territories is lifted.

Jews For Justice For Palestine believes that any peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authorities will fail unless the settlement program is halted and the 1.5 million people of Gaza are given a voice in talks about their own future. (minder lezen)

Among them are two holocaust survivors, ex-IDF, academics and two journalists.

Irene will carry desperately needed aid for the people of Gaza including:
children's toys,
school textbooks,
musical instruments, and
fishing nets for Gaza's fishing communities

The receiving organization in Gaza is The Palestinian International Campaign To End The Siege On Gaza, directed by psychiatrist Dr. Eyad Sarraj.

The boat will attempt to reach the coast of Gaza and unload its aid cargo in a nonviolent, symbolic act of solidarity and protest - and call for the siege to be lifted to enable free passage of goods and people to and from the Gaza Strip.

The Passengers will carry with them the names of dozens of Jews who have expressed support for this action, symbolic of the widespread support for the boat by Jews worldwide.

Richard Kuper, said today that the Jewish Boat to Gaza is a symbolic act of protest against the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the siege of Gaza, and a message of solidarity to Palestinians and Israelis who seek peace and justice.

'Israeli government policies are not supported by all Jews,' said Richard Kuper, a member of the organizing group of Jews for Justice for Palestinians. 'We call on all governments and people around the world to speak and act against the occupation and the siege. The Jewish Boat to Gaza is a symbolic act of protest against the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the siege of Gaza, and a message of solidarity to Palestinians and Israelis who seek peace and justice.'
